27 In a descending trail of dirt and darkness, the Now, Voyager poster associates sexuality with a fall from class and sexual superiority.

Narrating change without shattering trauma, then, Prouty’s love plots operate according to a logic of benign variation and soft-seeming supremacy: racial and economic superiority in the new cosmopolitan modernity are always overshadowed by love’s lifting, abstracting, and shimmering luminosity. Love makes possible flourishing and living on amid all sorts of converging contradictions. In the end, all novels in the Vale chronicle perform a bargain between what they know about the social and subjective operations of the institutions of intimacy and the dream of love’s superpower they cannot relinquish for fear of having no hope about anything. This bargain is the subject of this chapter: what does it cost to remember love while forgetting everything else?
